Why "allowable"? Well throughout history chairs have reflected the status of the person sitting on them. The size, decoration and sheer ornateness of the chair saying a lot about the person sitting in it. Indeed in classical times to the time of the pharaohs, the chair was reserved for the high and mighty, only kings, lords and bishops were allowed chairs at all, the rest of the populace had to do with sitting on chests, benches or stools.
Armless upholstered chairs have been in existence for quite some time. Indeed, the practice of padding or upholstering chairs dates back to the 16th century when they were used by the wealthy as a symbol of their affluence and luxury. Armless upholstered chairs also followed this development closely and have been in use since then. Armless upholstered chairs present several advantages or benefits that give them favorable consideration.
These size designations have more to do with the chair user's height than weight. However, if a shorter chair user requires a wider seat or extra lifting capacity, wide chairs come in their own versions of Small, Medium, and Large, etc. That way someone who is short, but who weighs a lot will have a chair that fits more comfortably than a traditional sized lift chair made for someone much taller.
